Monday night recap, December 2, 2019

Hi,

Fantastic meeting last night, we were fortunate to have two presentations on pyrography.  Our first presenters were two UOIT students, they have developed a new product which allows you to chemically burn wood (the chemical is non-toxic).  The product is called the “PyroMarker”, it’s similar to a thick pen which stores the chemical that burns the wood, once you’ve marked your project, simply add heat from a heat gun and your project is instantly burned.  A very cool product, additional information is available on their web site, www.pyromarker.com.

Our second presentation was presented by Kade Bolger, on the topic of traditional wood burning or pyrography.  Kade ran through his techniques and tools for texturing his projects, great feedback and questions from the membership, it was an awesome presentation.  Thank you Kade for taking the time to run through your process, very informative.

Next week, Don MacLean will our presenter for the evening and the topic will be on router basics.  Don has extensive background with the router, he’s been routing for a number of years and is a wealth of knowledge, I highly recommend attending next week’s meeting.

Margo McNab passed along a note to say that the Rona store located on Simcoe Street, South of Taunton will be closing at the end of January 2020.  The store will be holding supervised closing sale on all materials and goods, suggest that you make a visit to the store to check out any deals.  Thanks Margo for the heads up.

Club elections will be taking place on December 16th, an email was previously sent with all of the details, if you would like a copy of the email, please let me know.  You can also visit the club web site, all of the information will be available.  Please note, the nominations are open to all DWC members, the deadline is this coming Monday December 9th.  If you would like to help out and be on the executive or you would like to nominate someone, please have the information in to me by next Monday night.  Attached is a copy of the nomination ballot.

Annual General Meeting agenda will be sent out this week, the AGM will be on December 16th, if you would like to have an item added to the agenda, please send an email to my attention.

We are in need of volunteers to help take down a pipe organ, we have been asked by a family in Whitby, the husband passed away and the family needs our assistance.  If you can help, please let me know.

Monday night recap, November 25, 2019

Hi,

Great meeting last night, awesome discussion regarding the various styles and types of air compressors, as well as, air tools.  Below is a link for the presentation from last night, as well as the notes found on line from KMS tools regarding the selection process for an air compressor.  If you’re in the market for a new compressor for your shop, I would definitely recommend the newer “quiet” versions, the feedback last night was very positive regarding the reduced noise level.

Congratulations to Gord Dowsley, he was the early bird draw winner last night.  Gord will receive a cheque for the 2020 membership fee.

An email was sent today with an updated recap for the 2020 elections, please take a few minutes to review.  If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me anytime.

Next club meeting will be Monday December 2nd, it’s the first meeting of the month, which means it’s coffee and treat night.  Coffee will be available, be sure to bring in your sweet treats for everyone.  Kade Bolger will be demonstrating his pyrography techniques, and we’ll also have a guest speaker to start off the night, should be a great night.

Monday night recap, November 18, 2019

Hi,

Amazing evening last night, we had a tremendous presentation by Kade Bolger on wood staining and dyeing.  Kade ran through all of the materials used and the process to colour and texture his pieces.  Great topic and discussion by all, thank you to Kade for the presentation.

Chris Lapine had mentioned following Tim Yoder on YouTube, he was the gentleman who originally came up with the porcupine toothpick holder.  His YouTube channel is woodturningwithtim1, I would definitely recommend having a look at his videos.

Next week’s topic will be on compressors and air tools, I’ll be reviewing the key notes on the different types of compressors and the air tools that we use in our home workshops.  I would encourage the membership, if you use an air tool, bring it in and we’ll add it to the conversation.

I’ve attached a PDF file that was donated by Cecil Galpin for a bandsaw circle cutting jig, thank you Cecil.

Doug Ricketts has a friend who is selling approximately two or three cherry burls.  The number of burls and the amount for each burl still needs to be determined by Doug’s friend.  If you are interested, please contact Doug directly via email (address on membership list), please note, this will be on a first come first serve basis.  Pick up details and dates will be confirmed by Doug.

Monday night recap, November 11, 2019

Hi,

Aside from the horrible weather this past Monday night, we had a terrific evening.  Our guest speaker came with a truck load of awesome turning equipment, Ken Rude from Branches to Bowls spoke in great detail about the Vic Mark line of lathes and the line of Carter turning tools.  A number of members left with smiles, as they were able to make purchases on the spot, congratulations to everyone and our thanks to Ken and Vern for making the drive from the Hamilton Woodworking show to our club meeting.

Next week, Kade Bolger will be sharing a demonstration on how to add colour to your projects.  A while back, Kade brought in a beautiful pieces which he had coloured, Kade will be running through the steps he takes to colour his pieces.  This will be a great evening.

Volunteers are needed to help dismantle a partially built pipe organ, we’re hoping to repurpose the wood for club projects, if you can help, please email Rob at your earliest convenience.
