5. PRESENTATION ….. Andrew S, from LEE VALLEY, on Hand Planes and other info!
Andrew has been a technical advisor at Lee Valley for about 30 years, focussing on Tools and woodworking. Today he spoke to us about HAND PLANES, specifically the VERITAS brand, made in Ottawa, Canada.
Boxmaker’s Plow plane – Right or left handed, good for grooves, beading or rabbeting with the grain, 3mm to 10 mm (1/8th to 3/8th inch) wide cut. Adjustable fence. Great for small scale work (model boats, doll houses…) Mini version is 1/3 the size of regular plane, yet fully functional. Wood – ‘torrefied’ (roasted) maple used on these tools,
Combination Planes – reversible- left to right handed use. Many finely adjustable parts, good for beads, grooves, tongue and groove, rabbeting fluting, reeding, etc.
Lee Valley has an extensive antique tool collection. They build tools from first principles, looking at what is the problem to be addressed, what has been tried, etc.
Questions and comments:
Lost art of hand tool work? Maybe somewhat, but there has been some resurgence in recent years – handsaws, planes etc.
What is in development at Lee Valley? Can’t really say, but there is always something being worked on…stay tuned
Are LV in-house workshops still a thing? Fewer than in past years ( before Covid) but …
Are some some lower cost more affordable products being considered? Yes that is being looked at at LV.
What is the Development Process for a product? Andrew is willing to return to present on just that… it is a detailed process with many steps
How to get a new tool for your home shop?!? Plan and make a nice project for someone, as that might NECESSITATE getting that new tool!
Why is LV still using pen and paper catalog/order system at their stores? That process is to be refined, especially as younger folks expect it to modernize somewhat.
Will there be more seasonal ‘pop-up’ stores? YES about 17 this year…they will be listed on LV website.
SOME TIME WAS SPENT SETTING UP AND TRYING OUT THE PLANES THAT ANDREW BROUGHT IN! THANK YOU to Andrew
REMEMBER: IMPORTANT SPECIAL MEETING NEXT WEEK NOV 2ND.
