Club Updates

Fun meeting last night, our guest speaker was a representative from the Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue.  Nicole spoke about the how Soper Creek started and its current mission in the Durham Region, a very worthy cause.  Calvin has set up a group to help Soper Creek with their “wish” list and Don McFarland donated a squirrel box, which will be used for nesting of the animals.  If you’d like to volunteer with Calvin’s group, please contact Calvin directly.

Next week, we have a meeting scheduled on Remembrance Day, we have a guest speaker from “Branches to Bowls”.  They are a distributor of Vic Mar lathes as well as, Carter turning tool, it should be a great evening.

• Early bird draw will be on November 25^th, if you pay your 2020 membership dues on or before this date, you will be entered in a draw to win back your membership dues.  As a point of clarification, new members are eligible to participate, excluding the new member initiation fee.
• We’ll be holding elections at our next AGM which will be held on December 16^th, all nominations must be submitted in writing to the executive on or before December 2^nd.  All nominations will require two signatures of current members in good standing.  Additional details at the next club meeting.
• Trend Air Stealth Half Mask orders must be submitted no later than Friday November 8^th, additional details to follow on a separate email.

Great meeting last night, we had a fantastic presentation by Teresa Turner from Canabo Medical Group regarding the cannabis industry in Canada.  Teresa’s presentation was extremely informative and offered great insight into the industry, as well as, a deep dive into the components and uses for cannabis.

Thank you to Keith White, President of clinic operations for Aleafia Health Inc, for sponsoring the evening, the membership were treated to coffee and donuts as well as a few other goodies.  The presentation was capped off with a number of great questions from the membership, which Teresa provided great feedback.  A copy of tonight presentation is posted on the club web site for those members interested in learning more about cannabis.

As next Monday night will be the first meeting of the month, we’ll have our coffee and treat night, please be sure to bring a sweet treat.  As well, we’ll be featuring a guest speaker next week as well, Calvin has arranged for the team from Sopher Creek Wildlife Reverse to come speak to the membership.

As part of the evening, we’ll also have our tip and jigs segment, if you use a handy jig or have a great tip, be sure to bring it next week, it’s a great way to share your experience with the membership.

The club is selling a number of ash boards (donated by Jim Robinson), the pieces range in length and width, each piece will be $5.00 per board, all funds raised go to back into the club.  If you’re interested in making a purchase, please contact Calvin Perry, please note, this will be on a first come, first serve basis.  Please note that wood cannot be stored at the club.

Hi,  

Fantastic evening last night at the Busy Bee store in Pickering.  We had an excellent turn out for the event, I spoke with a number of the members throughout the evening, there were a number of purchases (some larger than a bread box), congratulations to everyone for taking advantage of the deals.  

Thanks to the staff at Busy Bee for hosting our club and to the vendors from DeWalt, Titebond, Krieg & Trend, a lot of great questions about the various products for each of the companies.  At our next meeting I’ll be discussing an upcoming group buy for a new Trend dust mask that just came out on the market, the Trend rep brought a sample to the open house and the feedback was very positive.

Congratulations to Wayne Whitehead, he was the prize winner for the free draw.  Wayne won a beautiful metal storage container to securely hold all of his tools.

Our next meeting we’ll have a guest speaker presentation, be sure to attend.  Don’t forget to bring in your gallery items for display.

Thanksgiving holiday, no meeting

Good meeting last night, a good representation at the gallery table with a number of impressive pieces.  Calvin did a great presentation for the membership regarding the We Grow Foods outdoor benches, the team did a tremendous job building six benches that will be used in the community.  Thanks to the two members from the We Grow Food team, they provided the membership with a sneak peek at their mobile educational trailer, it was a very impressive project.

Next week there will not be a club meeting as it’s Thanksgiving, we’ll start back up the following week.  On October 21^st, the club meeting will be held at the Busy Bee store in Pickering, the address is 1064 Salk Road, Pickering (Brock Road & 401).  The store will be closed to the public, Busy Bee will be holding a special event for the membership, they will be bringing in tool vendors to talk about their products, as well as, offering assorted deals on items purchased.  Start time is 6:30 pm, bring your membership card or club name tag to provide proof of membership.  There will be parking, if you can car pool, I would strongly suggest that you call a friend.

Hi all,

Great meeting last night, we had a really good discussion and presentation on how to remove rust from your equipment.  It was great to see members bring in their favorite rust removing methods, awesome discussion around tips and general rust removal questions.  A copy of the presentation will be posted on the club web site, for those that missed the meeting.

Next week will be our coffee and treat night, our first one of the new season.  We encourage everyone to bring in a treat, coffee will be available before and during the meeting for everyone.  We’ll also have the folks in from We Grow Food for a presentation, it will be a good night.

On October 21^st, the club meeting will be held at the Busy Bee store in Pickering, they will be hosting the club on a special night.  They will be bringing in vendors to provide product demonstrations, as well, they will be offering special deals to club members.  Please be sure to bring your club membership card with you.

Great meeting last night, we had a terrific presentation by Chris Lapine on dust masks.  A number of the membership brought in their dust masks and we discussed the various advantages of each, Noel brought in his Trend dusk mask/face shield for show, great product, thanks Noel.  

We’ll post Chris’ PowerPoint presentation on the club web site, in case anyone would like to review it, and we hope to have the full evenings discussion on our YouTube channel in the near future.  Thanks Chris for another great presentation.

Tony Josevski passed along an ad for a new Trend Air Stealth face mask, if anyone is interested in purchasing, it’s sold by Peach Tree Woodworking Supply Inc, located in Georgia (US).

Next week, we’ll be bringing up a piece of equipment from the shop which has been exposed to water damage, and we’re going to demonstrate how to clean off the rust and protect the surface for the future, it should be another great evening.

Girls Inc. of Durham will be hosting a wine and cheese auction on Friday October 25^th, we’ve been asked if members would like to donate auction items, if you would like to donate, please contact Calvin Perry.  The details of the event will be posted on the club web site.

Thanks to everyone who voted on the club logo design, below is the winning submission.  Now that we have a confirmation on the logo, we’ll be working on new DWC gear for everyone to purchase.

Great meeting last night, there were a number of submissions to the gallery last night, please keep them coming!  

Chris LaPine did a great job regarding overall safety in the shop, the “true confessions” segment was well represented, a number of good comments and experiences were shared with the group.  We’ll post Chris’s presentation on the club web site for those that missed it, we should have the video up on our YouTube channel is a couple of weeks.   Thanks again Chris for taking the time to pull together a great discussion.

Next week, we’ll be following up on the shop safety theme, we’ll be hosting a presentation on dust masks in and for the shop.  Everyone is encouraged to bring in your shop dust mask, we’ll have additional items to present, should be another good discussion.

Woodchuckers are offering a limited time purchase of the Uvex face shield, the current price is $34.95, with all of the tariffs being imposed on China, there will be an anticipated 20% price increase that will be applied in the near future.  If you would like to purchase a face shield at the current price, please reply via email and let me know, the cut off is Thursday noon.

Welcome back to the 2019/2020 Durham Woodworking Club season!  We held our first club meeting last night, although we had a guest speaker planned, unfortunately due to last minute unforeseen issues, our guest speaker could not attend.  While the guest speaker could not attend, we did have a good meeting to start the season.

We had a tremendous response to the ongoing wig stand program, last night on the gallery table, there were 15 new wig stands to be presented to Hearth Place.  A shout out to Andy Valliere for the amount of wig stands that he has turned and donated, but also to raising the bar with the artistic designs that he has incorporated into his pieces, thank you Andy.  Kade will have more information regarding the wig stand program at the next meeting.

Also, congratulations to Calvin Perry and his team of builders, that produced six new outdoor benches for the “We Grow Food” program.  Calvin secured donated wood for the project, the team designed and built the benches over the summer and have distributed the benches to their new homes in the community.  Congratulation to everyone involved.

For those members that picked up free wood blocks at the end of season (May) from Dale Coolidge, Dale has asked that if you have made something from this wood, could you please take a picture and send it to Dale.  He would like to pass it along to the folks that donated the wood, it may be useful for any future donations.  If you need Dale’s email address, please check the club directory which was sent out in May.

Doors open will take place Saturday September 28^th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Simcoe Street Church.  The club will be open to receive guests, if you would like to volunteer to work in the shop that day, please notify Rick Sullivan or Chad Shaw via email or phone.

An invitation from the Kawartha Woodturning Guild has been forwarded to our club regarding a demonstration by Nick Agar.  The date of the demonstration is Saturday November 17^th @ 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, cost is $45 per person which includes lunch.  If you’re interested in attending, please let me know, I’ll add your name to the list, I’ll also post on the club web site.

There are a handful of requests from individuals for paid work, I’ll post the details on the club web site on a separate page.

• This Wednesday night, Denis and Chris will be hosting an open turning night from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  If you have any turning related questions or would like help with a project, please feel free to stop by the shop.
• This Thursday night, Mike will be hosting an open shop night, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Chad will be in the shop from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, for anyone who would like to use the shop in the evening, this is a good opportunity for additional shop time hours.
• Our next meeting, Chris will be leading a discussion on shop safety.  He’ll be looking for group participation on your experiences in your personal shops around shop safety, as Chris calls it, “True Confessions”, I know that we all have stories to share.

Good meeting last night, although we had technical issues and could not review the video clip, it will be posted on the club web site, it was a really good overview of the miter saw.  We did have a number of good discussions to complete the end of our season, we’re now heading into our summer break, there will not be any new Monday night meetings over the summer until we start back up on Monday September 9th.  The shop will be open during regular shop hours, however a summer schedule will be posted on the club website, please check regularly to confirm that the shop will be open.  As well, the shop will be closed from June 10th to 14th, Wayne Pye and his team will be cleaning and painting the shop to give a fresh new look.
