Club Updates

Great meeting last night, Dan Kuzmicki our web and social media lead discussed all of the new changes to the club web site, as well as our new Instagram page.  Dan has done a great deal of work to improve everyone’s experience when surfing our website for general information, as well as, meeting highlights and gallery images.  As you review the updated web site, I would encourage everyone to click on all of the various links and tabs, you’ll be taken directly to any number of new pages.  Don’t forget, you can now pay your membership dues on-line using the new secure web site.  All of the gallery images will be posted to the new Instagram page, you have the option to view on your computer or on your mobile phone, if you choose your smartphone, be sure to upload the Instagram app.  Thanks to Dan for all of his hard work, the improvements are greatly appreciated by all.
During last nights meeting, Chris Lapine and Don McFarland we discussing another group buy of cheese slicer components, Don has advised that the company which produces the components is closed for vacation, but will be re-opening April 24th, so the order will be placed after the 24th, if anyone is planning to be in the US around this time frame, please let Chris or Don know, if someone could potentially pick up our order from the US, it would be greatly appreciated.
House keeping

• Wednesday night Denis and Chris will be hosting the open turning night, 6:00 pm sharp.
  
• Thursday night, Wayne Pye and Wayne Peden will be working on the new library cabinets, if you’re interested in learning how to build cabinets or in this case, doors for cabinets, be sure to come out.
  
• Don’t forget, Chad will have the shop open from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, so if you want to get a bit of time in the shop, be sure to drop in.

Outstanding meeting last night, it was our second coffee and treats night, Chad did a great job making the coffee and the membership brought in awesome treats for the group (my compliments to the member who brought in the banana chocolate chip cookies, they were great).  

The gallery was awesome as always, a number of great projects, as well as a few really good jigs that would be useful in any shop.  For those members that use Instagram, the club has a new Instagram site, under the search bar, look up “Durham Woodworking Club”, Dan will be posting images from the gallery on a weekly basis (Thanks Dan).

Following the gallery segment, we held our first Annual General Meeting (AGM), on the agenda, review and vote on our update constitution and by-laws.  We had a great discussion regarding both documents, a number of terrific suggestions were added to the final version which passed unanimously, attached is a copy of both documents for everyone, we’ll also post copies on our web site for future reference.  I like to acknowledge Paul Kidson and the sub committee members that worked to produce both documents, Noel Green, Mike Beeton & Doug Ricketts, thank you to all of the sub committee members, your support is greatly appreciated.

As well, attached are two drawings, one from Dale Coolidge on a cool project to hang a towel or a piece of paper, Dale found the item in a retail store and thought that the membership might find it handy, it was a good item during the gallery. 

Also, Chris has passed along a detailed diagram for the upcoming cheese slicer demonstration being held this Saturday, start time is 9:00 am, if anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact Chris directly.

Great meeting last night, we were fortunate to have the team from “We Grow Food” present their amazing program to the membership.  We Grow Food is a not for profit organization that helps local communities create gardens in open spaces, which in turn donates all of the food grown to any member of the community.  They also work with local youth to teach them the value of growing food in an open environment and giving back to the community.
The presentation to the membership was inspiring, the group from We Grow Food has requested a donation of the clubs time to help put together bench and chair kits that their teams can build on site, Calvin will be reaching out to membership looking for volunteers.  If your interested in learning more, the web iswww.wegrowfood.org, their email is communications.wegrowfood@gmail.com, you can also call @ 905-439-2527, please feel free to tour their web site and communicate directly with them.  Thank you to the ladies from We Grow Food for their time last night.

Great meeting last night, Kade Bolger did an outstanding presentation on how to prepare logs for turning, as well as, flat work.  Kade went through the steps on how to mark up and prep a log before cutting, as well as, a PowerPoint presentation on the different types of cuts. 

We hope to have Kade’s presentation on the club web site in the short term and we’ll post Kade’s demonstration to the club YouTube channel for those who were not present on Monday night.  Thank you to Kade for putting together a terrific presentation!

Housekeeping

• April 6^th, Chris Lapine will be hosting a demonstration in the club shop on how to build a cheese cutting board, with cheese slicers.  If your interested in attending, please be at the shop for 9:00 am on Saturday April 6^th, no need to sign up, attendance is open.  Please bring with you a hardwood board (5 ½” W x 9” L x ¾” thick), along with the cheese slicers that Chris was selling a few weeks ago, there will be a limited supply available during the demo, on a first come first serve basis.

Great meeting last night, a tremendous offering of gallery items from the membership, images will be posted on our web site, definitely a must see.  Congratulations to Kade Bolger for taking first place in the turning competition (intermediate category) with a couple of pieces at the Brooklin Carving Show this past weekend, as well as to Chris Lapine for first place in the novice category, followed by myself with a second place showing, a number of the pieces were shown at the gallery.

Thank you to Rick Sullivan, Don Gaudet and Dave Roberts for staffing the clubs table at the show, they spoke with perspective members, answered questions and represented the club.

As well, we had a great presentation from Chris Lapine on the techniques for gluing boards, attached is a PDF copy of the presentation by Chris, which will be posted on the club web site.  There were a number of great questions from the membership, which the entire group enjoyed the discussion.  Thanks to Chris for taking the time to pull together a great PowerPoint slide show and presenting to the membership.

Mike Kellar brought forward an issue with one of the Talon chucks used for turning last night, unfortunately, one of the jaws has fallen out of the chuck, leaving it unusable with only three gripping arms, if anyone might know if its whereabouts, please email or text me with notification.  As well, Mike brought a great jig diagram, which is attached as a PDF file, which shows how to build a miter jig, a definite must for cutting angles on your table saw.

We’ll be hosting our first Annual General Meeting (AGM) on April 1^st, the purpose will be review our overall plans for 2019, as well as, to vote on any changes to the current constitution and by-laws.  As this will be the first Monday of the month, we’ll also be hosting our coffee and treat night.  I’ll be sending out a copy of the agenda in the coming weeks, so members can prepare for any questions.

Great meeting last night, our casual coffee night was a huge success, thank you to everyone for bringing in all of the fabulous treats.  We had a great follow up discussion around the Toronto Woodworking Show, as well as a number of terrific questions on a number of topics. 

The number of pieces brought forward during the gallery was awesome, please keep bringing in your projects, everyone picks up something from each of the gallery submissions.

Next week, we’ll be hosting a demonstration and discussion on glue up techniques, Chris will be leading the discussion.  As well, Dan will be taking a few minutes to talk about our new web site.

• The Brooklin carving show will be coming up this Saturday, March 9^th.  The event will be held at the Brooklin community center, start time 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, admission is free, donations accepted.

We had a good meeting last night!  Our gallery segment is turning into an awesome show and tell, the number of pieces being brought forward and the quality of work is amazing.  A quick shout out to Otto Ferencz for bringing in his home made vice, it was made back in Otto’s high school days, it was quite impressive. 

As well, a call out to Wayne Schroder, Wayne made a replica of the Hockey Night in Canada logo, it was stunning.  His replica was so good, Wayne was commissioned to produce a Maple Leaf’s logo by Rick Sullivan, our die hard leaf’s fan.

We capped off the evening with “tips and jigs”, we had a few great jigs brought forward by Chris Lapine, Kade Bolger and Dale Coolidge, images will be posted on the club web site.  As well, Dale and Andy Wintonyk will be producing grinding jigs for the turning group to help with specific grinding angles for sharpening turning tools.  As soon as everything is ready, I’ll send out an email to membership with all of the details.

• Wednesday evening, open turning night, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
• Thursday evening, open shop night, shop will be open from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

With the upcoming bad weather scheduled for Monday afternoon and evening, our regular club meeting will be cancelled.  For the time being the shop will be open, however, if the church staff feel the need to close the church early, please be prepared to exit the shop.  Our next regular club meeting will take place on Monday February 4^th.
