Great meeting last night, our casual coffee night was a huge success, thank you to everyone for bringing in all of the fabulous treats.  We had a great follow up discussion around the Toronto Woodworking Show, as well as a number of terrific questions on a number of topics. 

The number of pieces brought forward during the gallery was awesome, please keep bringing in your projects, everyone picks up something from each of the gallery submissions.

Next week, we’ll be hosting a demonstration and discussion on glue up techniques, Chris will be leading the discussion.  As well, Dan will be taking a few minutes to talk about our new web site.

Housekeeping

• Wednesday night is open turning night, start time is 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
• Thursday night the shop is book for Wayne Pye & Wayne Peden, they’ll be discussing cabinet builds for the new library, start time 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
• As the shop will be booked on Thursday night, Chad will keep the shop open from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, if you would like to use the shop, please feel free to stop in any time before 6:00 pm.
• The Brooklin carving show will be coming up this Saturday, March 9^th.  The event will be held at the Brooklin community center, start time 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, admission is free, donations accepted.

We had a good meeting last night!  Our gallery segment is turning into an awesome show and tell, the number of pieces being brought forward and the quality of work is amazing.  A quick shout out to Otto Ferencz for bringing in his home made vice, it was made back in Otto’s high school days, it was quite impressive. 

As well, a call out to Wayne Schroder, Wayne made a replica of the Hockey Night in Canada logo, it was stunning.  His replica was so good, Wayne was commissioned to produce a Maple Leaf’s logo by Rick Sullivan, our die hard leaf’s fan.

We capped off the evening with “tips and jigs”, we had a few great jigs brought forward by Chris Lapine, Kade Bolger and Dale Coolidge, images will be posted on the club web site.  As well, Dale and Andy Wintonyk will be producing grinding jigs for the turning group to help with specific grinding angles for sharpening turning tools.  As soon as everything is ready, I’ll send out an email to membership with all of the details.

• It’s Tuesday evening and the winter storm front is upon us, the shop will be closed this evening.
• Wednesday evening, open turning night, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
• Thursday evening, open shop night, shop will be open from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

With the upcoming bad weather scheduled for Monday afternoon and evening, our regular club meeting will be cancelled.  For the time being the shop will be open, however, if the church staff feel the need to close the church early, please be prepared to exit the shop.  Our next regular club meeting will take place on Monday February 4^th.

Great meeting last night, we watched a YouTube video of a gentleman, Adrian Ferrazzutti who is a skilled furniture maker, his video from last night focused on mosaic veneering.  Included is the link to Adrian’s furniture web site and he has videos on his YouTube channel, I would highly recommend viewing both, we’ll also upload the information on our web page.   Adrian’s web site is http://www.ferrazzuttifurniture.com.

• Calvin would like additional volunteers to help out with the Kub Cars program, please contact Calvin for additional information.
• Ron Whitbread will be tuning up the table saw this Saturday from 9:30 am to noon, if you would like to learn how to tune up a table saw or would like to connect with Ron, please feel free to stop by the shop on Saturday morning.
• Rick Sullivan will be taking lottery monies for the next round, the last day to pay will be March 4^th.
• Wednesday night will be the open turning night with Denis and Chris, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
• Thursday night Chad will be hosting an open shop night, 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, all welcome.
• 2019 membership fees are due, you can renew on-line, or during our Monday night meetings, cash, cheque, credit or debit, all are welcome, be sure to follow up with Paul Kidson or Greg Nevin.

Great meeting last night, Don McFarland treated the members to an awesome demonstration on FLOCKING.  Don ran through the correct techniques to properly flock a projected, the range of options to be flocked was quite large, ranging from turned projects to flat & scroll work to a wide assortment of items.  We’ll hope to have Don’s presentation up on our new web site shortly and we’ll see if we can get the video feed posted to our YouTube channel.  Thank you to Don for taking the time to prepare and present on the subject matter, it is greatly appreciated.

Chad Shaw has been working with the Back Door Mission at the church to help out with their food drive, he’s been doing an awesome job.  Attached is a list of items that the mission are accepting on behalf of their program, each week as you members come out to the Monday meetings, please feel free to drop off a donation in the bin as you pick up your badges.

Happy New Year

Terrific start to 2019 this past Monday night, no speaker this week, however, a lot of new and exciting things happening at the club.

Back in December, an email was sent to the membership with a request from the Simcoe Street United Church to help bring holiday for a number of families.  The executive agreed to donate $200 on behalf of the club and the membership, below is the email from the church, thanking the club

Hi Rob,

I wanted to say thank you so very much! All the help that you and woodworkers have provided went an extra-long way to making so many families happy this year! It was so heartwarming to me and such a blessing as the doorbell rang each time with another woodworker arriving with something in hand to help.

I personally give my thanks and want to let you know I am so grateful for all the woodworkers have done, but also, the community angels and all the families that received assistance want to express their gratitude as well, they will be forever thankful.

Please pass this along to the other members, as I do not have personal contact for those who so kindly lent a hand and filled others hearts with joy.

Thank you again, I wish for each and every one of you a blessed, healthy and happy New Year,

This coming Saturday, Chris Lapine will be hosting two demonstrations on how to straighten a warped board using a planner and jointer, start time for the first demonstration will be 10 am to noon, followed by a second demonstration starting at 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.  Chris has sent out an email to all members who have registered, if you’re interested please email Chris with your notification at chris.lapine@rogers.com.  Please bring hearing protection, the equipment is very loud and can harm your hearing.  

As well, Chris will be hosting a poly resin demonstration on Saturday January 19^th, participants will be instructed on how to create a heart shaped pendant with a poly resign fill.  If you’re interested in participating, please contact Chris via email.  Attached is a PDF file with heart shaped designs to select, you’ll need to secure a piece of wood to apply the design and to cut out the heart shaped design.

BTW, the club has a new web site, special thanks to Dan Kuzmicki, a lot of work has gone into the web site and Dan has more items to add in the future.  We should have access to on-line payments soon, Dan is just working out the details, it will be posted on the web site.  As well, a special thank you to Wayne Whitehead for all of his support as our web master.

·         We have an outside request for someone to make a half dozen “power” bracelets for a cancer patient, if you can donate your time, please let me know.

·         Wednesday night will be an open turning night hosted by Denis and Chris, start time is 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

·         Thursday night will be an open shop night hosted by Chad Shaw, start time will be 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, as well, Wayne Pye will be working on the French cleat wall.

·         Next Monday night, Don McFarland will be demonstrating the use of “flocking”, please feel free to google the word for a description of the event.

WOW, what a great night to end the year, we all had so much fun!  Thank you to all of the members that brought holiday treats, the serving table was completely full of cookies, cakes and snacks, I’m told that all were healthy.   The highlight of the night was Dan Alexanders hockey themed drink caddy, complete with a puck bottle openers, tissue dispenser and optional team logo which could be changed at a moment’s notice, depending on which bandwagon was rolling down the street.

Thank you to all of the participants in this year’s pen swap, what an amazing time.  Everyone brought a great pen to swap with, but also had great stories about the pen kit or the material used to make the pen.  Calvin was busy taking pictures, we’ll have those posted to the clubs web site.

Wayne Pye had a terrific idea, the club would like to collect everyone’s receipts from the following retailers, Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Lowes and Lee Valley.  The purpose of collecting the receipts is to validate to each of the retailers that the DWC membership has some significant purchasing power, with that, we’re going to ask for donations from these retailers to support our club.  We’re going to keep boxes in the shop that you can drop your original receipt or a photo copy, the receipts can be for any purchase, a fridge all the way down to a package of screws for a project.  Great idea Wayne, thank you.

·        Shop hours will remain the same this week, however, please note the following changes during the Christmas break, shop closed December 24^th, 25^th, 26^th, 27^th, open 28^th.  Shop closed December 31^st, January 1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd, open 4^th.  These updates will be available on the club calendar on our web site.  The club will start back up again on January 7, 2019, 6:30 pm sharp.

Great meeting this past Monday night, we were treated to a fantastic guest speaker, Steve Grainer from Sense of Calm.  Steve’s company produces an array of natural products, however, from the clubs perspective, Steve has a line of bees wax products that are perfect for finishing cutting boards, natural live edge serving boards and more.  Steve has a web site with all the products that they produce, please feel free to take a tour, www.senseofcalm.ca.  Thank you to Steve for taking the time to visit the club and answer all of the questions from the membership.

This coming Monday night is the last meeting for the year, we’ll be hosting our pen swap and we’ll be offering coffee and treats as our way of getting into the Holiday season.  If anyone would like to bring in treats for the group, please feel free, everyone is welcome.

Terrific meeting last night, Dale Coolrige ran though part two of his sharpening demonstration, highlighting how to sharpen both a chisel and a plane blade.  Great discussion on the “how to” portion, lots of questions from the membership.  Thank you Dale for taking the time to present to the membership, it was a very insightful presentation.

The new Oneway lathe is set to arrive in the shop on Wednesday morning, Denis will be holding a tutorial for members on how to use the new Oneway lathe during the Wednesday night turning forum.  If anyone is planning to use the new lathe, please plan to attend the tutorial.

Please be advise that the daily shop hours are from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, members must exit the shop at 3:00 pm sharp.  Please plan to clean and pack up your projects at 2:45 pm and leave the shop at 3:00 pm.

• There are a number of plastic containers containing in the spare shop room with free wood, if you’re interested in picking up some wood, please feel free, please leave the plastic bins.

Great meeting last night, thanks to Mike Kellar for chairing a great discussion on the making of homemade paste wax.  We’ll be posting on the club YouTube channel a short video clip that Mike brought along, showing a safe method to melt the bees wax.  For those not in attendance last night, the most common methods to melt bees wax are by double boiling (boiling a pot of water, then adding a second pot which will melt the bees wax) or by using a slow cooking crock pot.

Wayne Pye also suggested using a glass mason jar and placing it in a pot of boiling water to melt the bees wax.  The most important safety tip when making your own homemade past wax, do not leave the stove top unattended when melting the bees wax, if left unattended it could potentially start a fire.

Additionally, throughout the discussion, the group had a number of great tips, it’s best to use light weight mineral oil, which can be purchased at any local drug store.  Chad Shaw mentioned that he last purchased a gallon of light weight mineral oil from Rona, I believe the brand purchased was “DVL”.  It was also mentioned that we had a presentation last year from a gentleman who sells bees wax and we’re going to ask him to come back and visit the club and to sell his bees wax products.  All in all, it was a great discussion, a lot of great information.

The Simcoe Street United Church will be holding their annual Christmas market on Saturday December 1^st from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, it is a free admission and there will be a number of great activities, as well as, holiday gift items for sale.
